Should Rotary condemn anti-personnel mines?
We are asking all Rotarians to support Resolution 10-69 and Resolution 10-70 at the upcoming Council of Legislation!
Dear fellow Rotarians!
At the end of April 2010, a meeting of Rotary International's Council of Legislation (CoL) will be held in Chicago. On the agenda for discussion and voting are two resolutions (10-69 and 10-70), requesting that Rotary International, in pursuit of its humanitarian objective, clearly stands up for the worldwide condemnation of anti-personnel mines.
The resolutions were submitted to the CoL by three Rotary Clubs out of concern for Rotary's standing and credibility. For us, it is difficult to comprehend why Rotary International does not belong to the advocates of a condemnation of the anti-personnel mine terror weapon even though its prohibition under international law has already been signed by more than 150 countries in the Ottawa Treaty.
As a delegate (D.1930) to the Council of Legislation, I have initiated this online platform. It should give you as members of Rotary Clubs around the world the opportunity to voice your opinion on anti-personnel mines and to support the resolutions. If you believe that Rotary International should officially condemn anti-personnel mines, please tell the CoL-Delegate of your district. You may do so directly or by voting "yes" in the poll provided on the right. Also, please invite other Rotarians in your club or district to participate in this poll.
With sincere Rotarian regards
PDG Dr. Gerhard Selmayr
